How does it work? Each system can store 1000s of molecular signatures (for new materials, and proprietary materials) or “fingerprints” for identification, and we get you started with a library of common plastics. Laser light is shined on an unknown polymer which yields a fingerprint that is characteristic of a particular plastic. The analyzer searches the on-board library to find the matching fingerprint, and displays the correct polymer type for the sample. The analyzers are highly customizable- users can easily add new fingerprints from the PC with the ReporteR, or directly on the unit from the Inspector for new or proprietary materials.

The Inspector and Reporter are great tools for recycling facilities. There are often significant price differences between different grades of plastic. The Reporter is ideal for smaller facilities, that typically encounter the most common 25-50 types of plastic. Inspector 300

The Inspector 300 features the standard 785 nm laser, with up to 300 mW of power. For many applications, the 300 is the perfect balance between good performance and lower pricing compared to other handheld Raman analyzers. It meets industry expectations for resolution, signal/noise and analytical capability. The unit is designed for easy one-handed operation. It’s waterproof, dustproof and highly shock resistant. The comfortable thumb-wheel allows operation with gloves or other protective wear, without requiring the touchscreen for control. It’s designed to be washable and cleanable to avoid cross-contamination for testing different types of materials. The Inspector 300 is equipped with on-board chemometrics and is compatible with common 3 rd party packages. Optional 21CFR Part 11 compliance is available. more


Inspector 500 for Advanced Raman Analysis

In some cases, high fluorescence makes material analysis impossible with the more common 785 nm laser. For these cases, SciAps offers the Inspector 500. The 500 is equipped with a unique 1030 nm laser that suppresses fluorescence while still yielding strong Raman signals. It retains the portability and ease-of-use of the 300 but can analyze every Raman-active compound. It is particularly effective on cellulose-based compounds that tend to blind standard 785 nm systems with fluorescence. The fluorescence-beating Inspector 500 will do 100% of the job! more

Portable Near Infra-red (NIR) Analysis

SciAps also manufactures portable NIR analyzers for raw material verification. For some applications, portable NIR offers advantages over Raman. It is faster, generally completing tests in 1-2 seconds, making it more suitable for high volume testing in a production environment. NIR examines a larger area (about 1 cm diameter compared to 25 um from Raman). The NIR analysis is thus an average response over a larger area, making it better on less homogeneous samples. NIR is also less sensitive to the sample container, as there is no laser to focus at a specific sample depth. Finally because NIR is a wide bandwidth, low powered source, there are no eye-safety concerns as there are with Raman technology. more

SciAps is Serious about Laser Eye Safety

The “EyeSafe” accessory offers an easy approach that encourages testing samples on tabletops, whether in plastic bags or not. The laser beam exits the device (either the Reporter or the Inspector) and is redirected downward towards the sample in a hands-free operation. Once it strikes the sample the beam is dispersed and harmless to the eye. This method is far safer than a “point and shoot” approach where the laser beam is pointed in an arbitrary direction at a sample, where the laser could strike a bystander’s eye directly or via reflection from a mirror-like surface. Eye safety considerations are especially important when using the invisible 1030 nm or 1064 nm lasers.
